Transcript of the interview. Kazuo Ishiguro Hi, hello, Mr Smith, how are you Adam Smith Very well. Thank you very much indeed for calling, very kind. Like most sitting Supreme Court justices, Sonia Sotomayor is circumspect when talking about the court but she has written intimately about her personal life more so than is customary for a Supreme Court justice. When I was nominated by the president for this position, it became very clear to me that many people in the public were interested in my life and the challenges I had faced, she tells Fresh Airs Terry Gross. And I also realized that much of the public perception of who I was and what had happened to me was not quite complete. In her memoir, My Beloved World, Sotomayor recounts growing up poor in the South Bronx living with juvenile diabetes, a chronic disease being raised by a single mother after her father, who was an alcoholic, died and struggling to get a good education in spite of the odds. It became a best seller when it was published last year and has just come out in paperback. Interview Highlights. On addiction in her family and how it affects her sentencing in the court. Ultraviolence is the third studio album and second majorlabel record by American singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey, released on June 13, 2014 by UMG Recordings. I watched my father, who I knew loved me, kill himself with alcohol I watched a cousin Nelson whom I adored. That has always permitted me. It was not unusual for defendants to have families who depended on them, who loved them, who thought the world of them, even though they had done horrific things. When I was being nominated to the U. S. Court of Appeals, I was asked by the Senate to give them a record of how often I had departed from the then mandatory sentencing guidelines. And judges were permitted under certain circumstances to depart downward, give a lesser sentence, or depart upwards, give a higher sentence than the guidelines called for. I was shocked to find that I gave less downward departures, lesser sentences, and more greater sentences than the national average. I think because of my experiences, however, I could treat that person in my courtroom as an individual and not as a nonentity and at the same time hold them responsible for their acts. A Memoirby Sonia Sotomayor. On how she was able to succeed while her cousin Nelson didnt, despite growing up in the same neighborhood. I think theres always a discussion about nature versus nurturing, but I do believe that its always a combination of the two that impacts what happens to a person. For me, I was blessed, unlike my cousin Nelson, with being a girl. My family was more protective of me. I wasnt permitted to play outside alone. It was a different world for the boys in the family They were permitted to go out. I also think that each child has to have within them a desire to achieve something. For me, my initial goals were just to graduate from college because nobody in my family had done it. But the idea of having a mark that I wanted to achieve helped me. Nelson couldnt find that in his life. He loved being a musician. Regrettably, his father wanted him to be a doctor and their dreams clashed and I think Nelson never found the support that he needed to give reality to his dreams. On missing certain cultural references One day talking to my first year roommate. I was telling her about how out of place I felt at Princeton, how I didnt connect with many of the experiences that some of my classmates were describing, and she said to me, Youre like Alice in Wonderland. And I said, Who is AliceAnd she said, You dont know about AliceAnd I said, No, I dont. And she said, Its one of the greatest book classics in English literature. You should read it. I recognized at that moment that there were likely to be many other childrens classics that I had not read. Before I went home that summer, I asked her to give me a list of some of the books she thought were childrens classics and she gave me a long list and I spent the summer reading them. That was perhaps the starkest moment of my understanding that there was a world I had missed, of things that I didnt know anything about. As an adult there are moments when people make references to things that I have no idea what theyre talking about. On being Latina and her responsibility to her community You have to work harder. In every position that Ive been in, there have been naysayers who dont believe Im qualified or who dont believe I can do the work. And I feel a special responsibility to prove them wrong. I think I work harder than a lot of other people because of that sense of responsibility. Does it mean that I think that I have an obligation to any particular group including LatinosNo. My job is my job and, particularly being a judge, I would be doing a disservice to the Latino community if I ruled on the basis of a preference for any group. I have to rule as I do on the basis of the law. I do feel that I have a special responsibility to work harder to prove myself because I am the first of a group that has been perceived as being incapable of doing whatever it is that Ive had the benefit of becoming a part of. On women trying to have it allThis whole continuing question about whether women can have it all I think its the wrong question. I think the right question should be, What makes you happy as a person Do you want to not have it all but to have both in your life in an imperfect way Because if the question presupposes that youre going to do both and be equally happy at every moment, its a false question. Its a compromise its a balance its figuring out whats the most important thing you have to give at that moment and to what. All of that is a constant work in progress. Dan Auerbach to revamp what she initially considered to be the completed record. The project saw additional contributions from producers including Paul Epworth, Greg Kurstin, Daniel Heath, and Rick Nowels, and features a more guitar based sound than Del Reys previous releases. Ultraviolence received positive reviews from contemporary music critics, who commended its cohesion as a concept album. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 2. Del Reys first number one album on the chart and the best selling debut week of her career. Ultraviolence was preceded by the digital release of five singles, the top 2. West Coast, Shades of Cool, Ultraviolence, Brooklyn Baby and Black Beauty. In May 2. 01. 5, she embarked on The Endless Summer Tour featuring live shows with Courtney Love and Grimes, to support the album. Background and productioneditAfter the release of Born to Die in 2. Del Rey dismissed the idea of releasing another album, because she had already said everything she wanted to say. However, by February 2. Del Rey had started work on an album saying, Its a little more stripped down but still cinematic and dark. Ive been working on it really slowly but I love everything Ive done. Ive been writing in Santa Monica and I know what the record sounds like. Now I just have to finish it. Musically Ive worked with the same three guys. She mentioned that one of the songs off the album would be called Black Beauty. When the demo version leaked in July, Del Rey stated I do feel discouraged, yeah. I dont really know what to put on the record. But I guess I could just put them on and see what happens. Each time I write. Ill never write a song if I dont think its going to be perfect for the record. She also stated that she was writing low key and stripped back songs and was working with Dan Heath, her then boyfriend Barrie James ONeill and that she wanted to work with Lou Reed. In October, Del Rey said about the prospect of a new album, When people ask me about it, I just have to be honestI really dont know. I dont want to say, Yeah, definitelythe next ones better than this one, because I dont really hear a next one. My muse is very fickle. She only comes to me sometimes, which is annoying. By January 2. Del Rey and Dan Auerbach were rumored to be working together at Auerbachs Easy Eye Sound recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee and he was said to be producing her upcoming album. Del Rey and Auerbach were initially scheduled to work together for three days but ended up spending six weeks recording a full album. On February 2. Del Rey posted a picture of herself and Auerbach on Twitter with the caption Me and Dan Auerbach are excited to present you Ultraviolence. About working with Del Rey, Auerbach later said She impressed me every day. There were moments when she was fighting me. I could sense that maybe she didnt want to have anybody think she wasnt in control because Im sure its really hard to be a woman in the music business. So we bumped heads a little bit, but at the end of the day we were dancing to the songs. The artist stated that the album draws inspiration from the West Coast, as well as from Brooklyn, New York. In addition, it also features heavy guitars and jazz tones. Sally S Spa Crack more. Del Rey also stated that the inclusion of Auerbach was last minute the two had met in New York City when she believed that the record was finished. She characterized their time in the studio as having the opportunity to do what we wanted to do. On the release of Ultraviolence, she reaffirmed her earlier reluctance to make another album, saying I mean, I still feel that way, but with this album I felt less like I had to chronicle my journeys and more like I could just recount snippets in my recent past that felt exhilarating to me. ContenteditTheres not a running theme through Ultraviolence, its more atmospheric. Theres more of a general vibe going on. I feel like it has a narrative it starts with my favorite song from the record, called Cruel World, with these heavy guitars and I like that because its symbolically referencing the West Coast, and from there we move into parts of Brooklyn, sonically. Del Rey on the albums cohesion, 2. The sound of Ultraviolence was characterized as psychedelic rock,1. The first song on the album, Cruel World, is the longest song on the album, clocking in at six minute and thirty nine seconds. A breakup song, with 7. Del Rey considers this as her favorite track off the album. Shades of Cool was described by Consequence of Sound as a slow and slightly gloomy ballad marked by reverberated guitars, slight atmospherics, and Del Reys vocals that alternate between a hushed whisper and ephemeral wailing. The song consists of a chiming guitar, slow burn bass line, and swelling orchestra which surround Del Reys vocals. Del Rey said that she wrote Brooklyn Baby with Lou Reed in mind. She was supposed to work with him and flew to New York City to meet him, but he died the day she arrived. He is referenced in the line And my boyfriends in a bandHe plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed. In the title track, Ultraviolence, Del Rey directly references The Crystals He Hit Me and It Felt Like a Kiss in the chorus, which she had also heard a rendition of by Hole. West Coast is a mid tempo song with a psychedelic rock and soft rock verse and a surf rock slow tempo chorus. Musically, its composition is built around reggaedrum fills, blues influenced guitar riffs, and draws influences from indie rock music. Sad Girl was written about being the other woman in an affair. Del Rey wrote Money Power Glory as a reaction to her rise to fame. About writing it, she says, I was in more of a sardonic mood. Like, if all that I was actually going to be allowed to have by the media was money, loads of money, then fuck it. What I actually wanted was something quiet and simple a writers community and respect. Fucked My Way Up To the Top was written about an undisclosed female singer who, at first, mocked her for her supposedly unauthentic style, but then stole and copied it and became successful with it. Asked about the meaning of the song, Del Rey said Its commentary, like, I know what you think of me, and Im alluding to that. You know, I have slept with a lot of guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my record deals. Which is annoying.
